Child Literacy & Social Inclusion

A recent report (Department of Education and Science Inspectorate, 2007) found that over 30% of primary school children in disadvantaged areas suffer from severe literacy problems.
The NAPS Inclusion 2007-2016 has set a high level goal to reduce the proportion of pupils with serious literacy difficulties in primary schools serving disadvantaged communities to less than 15% by 2016.
The aim of this NESF Project is to identify best practice in the implementation of child literacy and social inclusion, as outlined in Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) as well as identifying challenges to effective implementation in and outside of schools, particularly in the home and the local community. The Project will adopt a case study approach, grounding the work of the Project Team in examples of policy delivery. The Project is being chaired by Professor Áine Hyland.
